Important Note: The character of HUMPHREY appears in underwear, both modern and period, and has brief moments when his bare buttocks are exposed, including a moment when Wilburn slaps his buttocks. An intimacy coach will be utilized to stage these moments.
WILBURN HUSSEY (Male, 30s-50s, any ethnicity) Once the glittering star of The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, Wilburn is a flamboyant, sharp-tongued diva famous for playing Shakespeare’s greatest women’s roles, all to critical acclaim. Now past his prime and aging into obsolescence, he’s struggling to hold onto relevance with a company (and playwright) that’s beginning to favor beauty over skill. Obsessed with keeping his star status, he uses Humphrey in his scheming but soon finds he’s unable to control the outcome of his manipulations. Important note: The character of Wilburn appears in underwear, both modern and period, multiple times throughout the script.
HUMPHREY HUGHES (Male, 20s-30s, any ethnicity) A wide-eyed cockney bread monger from the wrong side of the Thames, Humphrey stumbles into Shakespeare’s world by accident when he becomes an apprentice to Wilburn. He’s young, handsome, and a little rough around the edges, but his natural charisma and good looks quickly capture the company’s attention, including the affectionate eye of the Bard himself. Originally content to admire from the wings, he begins to realize he may have a real shot at the spotlight.
